PURELY PEVONIA: SERIOUS ABOUT SKIN
by Nina Africano

For many who discover Pevonia Botanica products at their favorite day spa, the experience is akin to a love-at-first-sight look in the mirror. Pevonia products and treatments are part of the spa experience at some of the country’s top destination spas such as the Phoenician, La Costa, and the Four Seasons in Newport Beach, CA, as well as the Spa at Secrets Excellence in Cancun (see The Skinny).

This Swiss company puts science and nature at the service of beauty and health, with the finest natural source ingredients and unique technologically advanced formulations that solve skincare problems and deliver potent, visible results. Pevonia products contain no artificial colors or fragrances, no mineral oil, lanolin, PBA, or S.D. alcohol, drawing instead on nature’s most healing and rejuvenating resources—vitamins, minerals, essential oils, liposomes, collagen, elastin, and marine plant extracts.

With the profusion of spa and skin care products, for a line of products to become one of the top spa product lines takes more than just a pretty scent—it takes a pretty face. In other words, it takes results that you can see and feel. After just a few weeks of using Pevonia products, I’m hooked.

Having combination skin—a “T-zone” (forehead, nose, and chin) that tends to be oilier than rest of my face—I have generally used products for “normal” skin, with all the rigor of a Chinese menu: one from column A, one from column B. Pevonia offers not just scattered products, but an entire face care regimen specifically formulated for every skin care type, with cream, cleanser, toner, mask, and even an aromatherapy oil in their Dry Skin Line, Sensitive Skin Line, Oily Skin Line, and in my line, the Ligne Fondamentale or Normal to Combination Skin Line. Often, “normal” equals “nothing special,” but Pevonia products do a fantastic balancing act—on one side, cleansing without drying, and on the other, moisturizing without clogging pores.

I’ve tried quite a few clay masks, and have taken to applying a thick layer on my forehead, nose, and chin, and barely a skim coat across my cheeks to avoid leaving my face parched. Well, these precautions were hardly necessary with Pevonia’s peachy smelling mask. Though I could feel the sebum in the product I removed from the T-zone, the rest of my face felt light and clean, but not dry. Similarly, the witch hazel-based Combination Skin Lotion toned, refreshed, and tightened pores without leaving the skin crying out for moisturizer.

On the other side of the balance, the Cleanser for Combination Skin creams off makeup without leaving any sort of oily residue, just a light whiff of grapefruit. In fact, the essential oils that give each Pevonia product a mild bouquet are as effective as they are aesthetic—grapefruit, rosemary, and lemon grass oil are all effective ingredients for balancing the skin’s oily secretions.

With the drying effects of cold, wind, and central heating, winter is a true test for a moisturizer. Pevonia’s Combination Skin Care Cream felt light going on and absorbed quickly enough to use under makeup, but was certainly rich enough for a night cream. In fact, I’ve never managed to keep my face so soft and hydrated throughout the winter.

While a rich cream that does not feel greasy is impressive enough, an Aromatherapy Face Oil that does not clog pores is quite a feat. Dubbed “Harmonie,” it strikes a clean chord of Grapefruit and Mandarin Orange Essential Oils, known in China as a “happy” scent.

I was also particularly impressed with Pevonia’s Eye Make-Up Remover Lotion. Part of the Eye Line, which includes Evolutive Eye Cream and Evolutive Eye Gel “C,” the lotion felt neither oily nor soapy, but completely swabbed away all mascara and shadow, without irritating my eyes at all.

In addition to the Eye Line, Pevonia has products for the feet, the bust and décolleté, and the Ligne Nymphea, or Spa Body Line. Other lines target specific skin care problems such as: Ligne Clarifyl for acne and problem skin; Ligne Spéciale for super sensitive skin, Ligne Rose for rosacea, and Ligne Radiance for lightening discoloration.

Incorporating natural phyto-extracts specifically created for him, Pevonia’s Men’s Care Line addresses razor burn, folliculitis, and more, with products rich in botanical liposomes. The Oxygenating Line offers four different Vitamin C formulations suitable for different skin types. Pevonia’s heavy hitters are the Power Repair Line, a variety of formulas to combat wrinkles and tighten the skin, and the brand new Caviar Line.

Vital-I-Tea, a collection of four gourmet loose leaf teas, is the latest addition to the Spalasium line, a harvest of natural scented soaps, candles, and bath salts that turn your bathroom into a spa.

Among the bath and body products in the Ligne Nymphea or Spa Body Line are three that target cellulite, and although I’ve always been more than a bit skeptical about any pills or potions that promise results without dieting or exercising, I am so impressed with the results of Pevonia’s skin care that I have high hopes. Check out the results in our upcoming “Cellulite Special,” just in time for bathing suit season.
