prod3-105FROWNIES GIVE YOU A REASON TO SMILE
by Jessica Skropanic

Americans are continually searching for ways to repair skin and reverse the signs of aging without surgery. Frownies offers a line of products that assist in this process with as small an effort as wetting the back of a piece of paper and placing it strategically on your face. Frownies are small pieces of unbleached paper with a vegetable-based adhesive on the back. They have perforated lines around shapes that fit the assorted problem areas of the face where wrinkles appear; the neck, the corners of the eyes, and the forehead. This simple little product has been a Hollywood happiness for a century.

In 1889, future entrepreneur Margaret Kroesen wanted to help her daughter, a concert pianist, improve her appearance. She had developed some rather pronounced wrinkles and frown lines. Kroesen created Wrinkle Eradicators, later called Frownies, for the sole purpose of helping her daughter. Results were so dramatic that the product was soon popular in the then-infant Hollywood. Frownies fans include big names such as Rene Russo, Olivia de Havilland, several of the Kennedy women, and Gloria Swanson (who wore them in Sunset Boulevard).

According to the company, some wrinkling is caused by the facial muscles. Frownies simply urges the facial muscles

“While the company promises changes in 30 days, I was really surprised to find that there was actually some change after only one application!”

to spread and relax over time at the wrinkle site. The method is based on the same process used when creating an orthopedic splint.

The Frownies company has also developed a line for protecting the skin from pollutants and helping reduce wrinkles and promote healthy skin. It can be used separately or in conjunction with their Frownies. The Rose Water Hydrator Spray feels cool and has a lovely scent! I plan to use it in the summer just to refresh my skin. The formula includes glycerin which assists the skin in both looking and feeling better Aloe juice which is a healing treatment and natural anti-oxidant, grapefruit seed which is an anti-oxidant that fights free radical damage, comfrey which stimulates growth and heals damage from free radicals, and hyaluronic acid to ‘plump’ fine lines.
(2 oz. bottle = $10.95)

The soap-free pH Balancing Complexion Wash is a gentle cleanser that left my skin feeling clean and fresh but free of product residue. It is an excellent wash for people wish sensitive skin like mine. It is describes as cleaning the skin of imbedded oil, wax and trapped pollution build-up, and is excellent for oily skin and blemish problems. The ingredients are kind to skin and include mineral water, apple juice, vegetable polyglucose, lemon juice, soapbark extract, yucca extract, methyl glucose dioleate, raw cane sugar, whole Vitamin E with 17 amino acids, lactic acid, acetic acid, and essential oils from grapefruit and lavender.
(4 oz. bottle = $18.95)

prod3-204Next in the Frownies regime is the Immune Perféct wrinkle cream that moisturizes the skin and is described as helping to fight the oxidation caused by UV rays and environmental pollutants. Don’t let the brown color fool you! The cream goes on clear. It had a smooth and pleasing sensation on my skin. The natural scent is soft and earthy, but disappears quickly. The ingredients include the whole form Vitamin E and amino acids, water-soluble melanin, liquid polymer system, and whole product synergy which create a biogenetically interactive cellular composition according to the company; a process which is stronger and more effective than any single ingredient. You only need a tiny drop to apply it over your whole face and neck. It really seemed to make my skin more radiant!
(50 ml. = $65.00)

prod3-303I started my regime at night so I could also test the whole line at once. I tried the ‘Face Lift in a Bag which includes two boxes of Frownies papers, the Rose Water Hydrator, the pH Balancing Complexion Wash, and the Immune Perféct wrinkle cream. After the cleansing and use of the cream my skin felt fresh and wonderful! I was amazed at how little cream was required, and how thin it was. It didn’t make my skin feel heavy. I followed the directions, taking the little papers apart and spraying the Rose Water Hydrator on the adhesive side. I gently spread the problem areas flat (the forehead, and corners of the eyes and mouth), and placed a Frownie at each point. While I looked a bit like a geometric etching, my face relaxed and I soon forgot I had them on. The instructions say to wear them for three hours or more, so I went to bed with them on. I woke up in the morning and ran to the mirror. I removed them gently with warm water and a washcloth. While the company promises changes in 30 days, I was really surprised to find that there was actually some change after only one application! I don’t have much wrinkling on my face (Thank you, Mom, Grandma, and everyone else in my maternal line!), but I still saw some plumping of the skin and reduction of wrinkles. And the topper is that the kit comes in the cutest little gold cosmetic bag.

The Face Lift in a Bag makes a great gift for the spa-lover and (costing $143.99 if the products are purchased separately) runs a reasonable $99.95 on the Frownies web site: www.frownies.com.
