POMEGRANATE HEAVEN: POMega5’s Oil of Life by Marilyn Green
I’ve always loved pomegranates. My mouth waters just at the thought of opening one up and exposing the deep red seeds bursting with juice and thinly held together by the delicate membrane. Even my mother’s instruction to eat them in the bathtub – the juicy seeds stain cloth quickly – never kept me from eating as many as I could get my hands on. I didn’t eat them for health; I ate them because of their luscious tang.
But a number of recent studies have given me the very rare experience of doing something ‘good for me’ that is nothing but pleasure. These studies support the legendary virtues of the pomegranate, which I find has traditionally been credited with potency in combating cancer, diabetes, skin conditions, aging and infertility.
Pomega5, a product line that uses cold pressed pomegranate seed oil from fruit grown organically in the Mediterranean (known for its high concentration of punic acid), cites a 2002 joint Japanese/US/Israeli study that showed that pomegranate seed oil not only inhibited breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion, it actually caused breast cancer cells to undergo apoptosis, a process by which cancer cells self-destruct.
They also point to a 2004 Saga University (Japan) study showed that rats fed a diet supplemented with 5% pomegranate seed oil had a 27% reduction in adipose tissue weight compared to the control group, fed a diet that did not include pomegranate oil.
The large red fruit with its ruby seeds produces oil which is a source of Omega 5 conjugated lineolenic acid and powerful antioxidant. PoMega5 offers a range of products from nutritional supplements to therapeutic skin care products: a cleansing bar, Healing Cream and Pure Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil in a dropper bottle.
The oil is undeniably sticky, but its effect on irritated, dry or even cracked skin was little short of miraculous when I tried it on my damaged hands, ugly and withered looking after days of working with clay and washing my hands frequently. My skin became far smoother and more supple with just two applications and it wasn’t a cosmetic change; the benefits continued long after the oil was washed away. A very little does wonders.
The healing cream is soft and silky, quickly absorbed, and kept my skin soft and smooth during days of swimming in chlorinated pools and saltwater – a miracle. The company’s cleansing bar has a gentle exfoliating action, followed by moisturizing with olive and pomegranate seed oils.
The supplements, for pomegranate power within, come as pure organic pomegranate oil and pomegranate oil combined with olive oil; the two provide Omega-5 acids and Omega-9 fatty acids.
The oil for external use is $68, as is the Healing Cream; the cleansing bar is $18 and supplements run from $58-$62 per bottle. For more information visit www.pomega5.com.
