What's a father to do when his son comes to him and asks, "Dad, do the things we put in the water hurt the fish and other animals?" In the case of Joseph Borkovic, the answer was to do a lot of research hand-in-hand with his son Zachary. Inspired by the discovery of toxic ingredients in many common hair and skincare products, father and son created Earth Spirit, a company that umbrellas several lines of skincare products including Biologika, Baby Organics, and their extensive line of skincare for adults, Emma Organics. Their cruelty-free products include certified organically grown ingredients which, Earth Spirit explains, have been selected to provide the skin with nutrients, produce superior softening, have cleansing action and give ultimate protection from environmental pollutants.
Emma Organics
What makes an excellent product for anyone like me with sensitive skin that still needs thorough cleansing and moisturizing? Easy - a product that does its job, but doesn't cause an undesirable reaction. Emma Organics' skincare collection is a complete skincare regime. All products contain certified organically-grown ingredients with no genetically enhanced ones. And what a difference organic ingredients made to my skin: No breaking out, no red spots, no dermal Îtemper tantrums' - just beautiful skin.
I should begin by saying that all of the Emma Organics products I tried contained a similar scent that was light and pleasant - fresh, clean, natural, and never overpowering. I really loved it!
Body Treatment
I began with the body treatments, the Moisturizing Body Wash, the Hand and Body Lotion, the Rose Hip Oil, and the Floral Toner. Many of the ingredients could have appeared on my grocery shopping list at the health food store; purified water, lavender, rosemary, sage, chamomile, aloe, Vitamin E, wheatgerm oil.
The Moisturizing Body Wash was light and lathered quickly. It rinsed off just as efficiently. My skin felt clean, but not dry nor itchy with product residue.
I then applied the Hand and Body Moisturizer, an all-over body lotion that felt great and penetrated quickly. It felt smooth and was as soothing on my delicate skin in the armpits and on the belly as it was superb at moisturizing hard-to-penetrate spots like the soles of my feet. I felt smooth and clean all over afterward, and my skin felt soft; not heavy or greasy.
The Rose Hip Oil is one of the best products I've ever tried! I used it on my face as well as the rest of my body. It penetrated quickly, and my skin looked radiant! My feet really loved it. (Note to massage therapists and reflexologists: This would be a fabulous product for foot massage.)
Lastly, before I dressed, I sprayed on the Floral Toner - a wonderful refresher! It felt cool and lovely, and my skin drank it up. To my nose it didn't smell as floral as it did like an herb garden after rain, and the scent was very light.
The result was one of beautiful, fresh-looking skin, and nothing that felt heavy, oily or artificial. All of the products penetrated quickly and left me feeling fabulous. Because they penetrated so quickly I was able to dress immediately: Fabulous!
Hands and Nails
Next I tried the Hand and Nail Cream - a thick and nourishing cream that disappeared into my skin almost as soon as I applied it. I can't tell you how nice it was to put on a rich nutritious cream without having to wait 5-10 minutes for it to find its way into my pores. The moisturizing action lasted through several hand washes.
Daily Regime
Now came the real test - my face. Boy, do I have temperamental skin on my face! And I don't really have combination skin, just fussy. Parts of it like this product, but don't like that product, while other parts like that but not this. Sometimes I feel like three or four siblings in a constant argument.
I tried the basic daily regime: the Foaming Facial Cleanser, the Exfoliant Facial Scrub, the Facial Moisturizer for Day and Night, and the Soothing Eye Cream.
The Foaming Facial Cleanser behaved similarly to the Foaming body Wash. It lathered up quickly, and had a similar clean scent. It also disappeared quickly, washing away the lather and leaving nice clean skin in its wake.
The Exfoliant Facial Scrub isn't harsh, but it gets the job done! I believe it actually moisturized my skin while it deep cleaned it. Removal was not difficult, as with many exfoliants, and it left my skin looking polished, but not dry or red. Again I was impressed at how well my whole face responded to the product.
I followed up the exfoliant with the Facial Moisturizer for Day and Night, a light lotion, but with real substance. It penetrated almost as quickly as I put it on, and my skin looked healthy, not treated.
The same occurred when I applied the Soothing Eye Cream on the delicate skin around my eye, and my lids. My eyes looked so good, I tried it on my lips too. They looked hydrated and thus more Îplump'. I couldn't believe it: Cheeks, chin, nose and forehead unanimously approved.
Deep Cleansing and Moisturizing
For a deeper cleansing and moisturizing facial treatment, I sampled the Revitalizing Mask followed by the Revitalizing Anti-Wrinkle Cream. While the mask is a little difficult to remove from the bottle, it's worth the effort. It is very smooth and creamy, not gritty. It was obvious it was working from the beginning. My skin tingled as the mask did its work, deep-cleaning my pores. They mask came off very easily, leaving squeaky-clean skin behind it.
Hello crows' feet! The Revitalizing Anti-Wrinkle Cream is, of course, heavier than the lighter moisturizing lotions from Emma Organics, but again I was truly impressed at how quickly it penetrated. The skin around my eyes began to reap the rewards of hydration immediately: My skin looked fuller, softer and smoother.
But the biggest surprise came when I had the products clustered near my computer while I typed. My husband - a handsome muscular bear of a fellow, who understandably avoids my product-crammed disaster of a medicine chest - came over to politely see what I was reviewing. He began picking up the bottles and reading the contents. He's really particular about anything that goes in or on his body, and practices the typical male avoidance of anything that smells even slightly "like a girl".
"This is nice," he said, beginning to show greater interest in my work - or the subject of it. I urged him to stake a claim to anything he wanted, and continued to type away at my review.
Now that I look up, I see that the bath and body lotion are curiously missing. Do I hear water running?
