Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Spa Vacation

With the rigid requirements airlines impose on checked baggage, not to mention the fees they're now charging, it makes sense to begin the de-stressing of a spa getaway at home.

  1. Think light. When in doubt, leave it out.

  2. Plan your wardrobe carefully. For a spa vacation, you'll be wearing casual and workout clothing most of the time. Make a list of all the activities you plan; then make a list of what you'll wear for those activities. Keep the list in your carry-on, so that if a bag gets lost, you'll have an inventory of what was lost.

  3. Mix and match basics; plan your vacation wardrobe around one or two colors.

  4. Traveling with a friend? Consider "cross-packing." Pack essential items for each person in the other's bag. That way, if one bag is lost, everyone will have basic needs until the bag is found or replacement items are purchased.

  5. If you are checking bags, place jewelry, medicines, contact lenses and other valuable or irreplaceable items in your carry-on. Also pack a change of underwear and socks – just in case your checked bag is lost or delayed.

  6. Mark your suitcase(s) well—not only with luggage tags, but also with a bright ribbon or yarn or something distinctive.

  7. Remove all old baggage claim tickets from your suitcases. When you arrive at the airport, make sure the correct claim tickets are attached to your suitcase(s).

  8. Use an approved TSA lock to secure your luggage. Although it won't deter professional thieves, it will discourage others.

  9. Get to the baggage claim area as quickly as possible to reduce the chances of theft of your bag.

  10. In addition to your medicines, take along sun block, lip palm, a travel size (3 ounces or less) of +moisturizing cream (the air in plane cabins is very drying), a copy of the photo page of your passport (this will make it easier to replace your passport, should it be lost or stolen) and duct tape (this can temporarily repair rips in luggage and just about anything).
