e've all heard of the Atkins diet, the Zone, the South Beach Diet, all best sellers, all written by physicians. But here's a somewhat quirky book written by a layman who lost 230 pounds (his mother lost 51 pounds, his wife, 23) on a regimen of his own devising, some of it borrowed from other diets.
In "Let's Do Lunch" (Sunshine Publications), author Roger Troy Wilson offers several interesting premises: that the natural sugar found in fruit is not fattening, that the biggest meal of the day should be eaten at lunch (mostly proteins and vegetables), that breakfast and dinner should ideally consists of fruits.
Wilson does, of course, recommend that his readers consult their own doctors before embarking on any diet. He also recommends, not a reduction of food intake, but rather eating in a different way. For breakfast, Wilson says: "Try to eat only a little fruit·to speed up your metabolism. It is my belief that fruits digest faster than any other foods and therefore, if eaten by themselves, speed up the body's metabolism naturally·Then, if possible, eat nothing throughout the rest of the morning, so that by lunchtime you are famished.
Lunch on Wilson's regimen is "all you can eat" of as lean as possible red meat, chicken, turkey, fish and other acceptable proteins, along with all you can eat of acceptable soups, salads, vegetables, etc. Dinner is "eat all you like" of fruits. "If, after eating only fruits or fruit smoothies for dinner you are still not satisfied, then eat acceptable soups, salads, vegetables, special salsa, antipasto, corn on the cob, popcorn, or something with beans, peas or corn·until you are satisfied. But no proteins." There's more, of course, but these are the basic guidelines. Wilson also provides recipes, and though some are not very appealing, they can simply serve to indicate what's okay and what isn't on this particular diet.
