f you are seeking improved health and vitality, the prestigious five star Aldemar Royal Mare Village and Thalasso provides an inspiring holiday with long lasting benefits. Located alongside a sandy beach on the beautiful island of Crete, the resort offers luxurious accommodation, a choice of restaurants, great leisure facilities and a fabulous thalassotherapy spa.
The island's climate, diet and olive oil are all factors why Cretans enjoy long life expectancy and the lowest rates of heart disease and cancer in Europe. Cretan food contains all the elements of the Mediterranean diet with balanced intakes of cereals, grains, vegetables, dried beans, olive oil, garlic, fresh herbs, seafood and fruit. Wine, free range lamb and poultry are taken in moderation but little or no animal fats like butter, cream and lard.
Most of Aldemar's 390 spacious rooms and suites are housed in low Cretan-style buildings set amid palm trees, gardens and swimming pools, linked by pathways edged with hedges of colorful hibiscus and oleander. There are also 100 rooms directly linked to the spa which is situated near the resort entrance. My comfortable room had a great bathroom and a sunny balcony overlooking a turquoise pool with the beach and all the resort facilities within walking distance. If you don't feel up to walking you can ring for a lift in one of the golf carts that zip about the complex. With two children's pools, mini club, tennis academy and water sports, the resort caters equally well for families as it does for couples and individual travelers looking for a quality sunshine break.
When Thalasso opened in 1995 it was Greece's first thalassotherapy spa. It uses seawater pumped directly from the Aegean Sea, cleaned and heated with solar energy. Over the years Thalasso's excellent treatments have won many accolades and in 2005 the spa was voted Europe's Leading Spa Resort at the World Travel Awards. The 40,000 square foot facility is impressive - designed over three floors with an indoor swimming pool, beauty center, aqua gym and Aqua Royal thalassotherapy pool on the top level; the main spa reception, changing rooms, thalassotherapy and other treatment rooms on the middle floor and a stunning new oriental hamman, large gym (with qualified trainers on hand to offer guidance and personalized training programs) and two squash courts on the lower level. Although the spa specialises in thalassotherapy, Thai and ayurvedic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki are also available. Entering the spa that first day, my initial impression was one of lightness and air - lots of turquoise and white tiles - and everywhere the cathartic sound of water - splashing, showering, running, flowing and cascading.
I was welcomed by a smiling English speaking receptionist and handed a clothes stand, bathing cap, robe and slippers. The first surprise was that the spa has no lockers or communal changing areas - just nice little private cubicles each with a mirror and chair. Your put your clothes and belongings in the stand which is securely stored away until you are ready to leave. A very civilised arrangement!
My spa treatments had been booked in advance, but if you are new to thalassotherapy or unsure about what treatments to try, it is a good idea to have a consultation with one of the spa's doctors. Because of the nature of the treatments (all that seawater, seaweeds and muds), thalassotherapy spas tend to be quite clinical places with tiled treatment rooms that are functional rather than luxurious. Therapists are briskly efficient so don't expect dimmed lights, candles or soft music! Most treatments last about 20 minutes and a typical program consists of three or four short treatments a day. The benefits of thalassotherapy are huge - seawater is similar in composition to blood and helps restore the body's state of balance through osmosis. The marine environment is exceptionally rich in nutrients and mineral salts, so what the body lacks is replenished by immersion and treatments. Thalassotherapy effectively reduces pain and stress, improves the circulation and slows down the degenerative aging process, so is an integral part of slimming and beauty treatments.
At Thalasso, most guests opt for one of the ten thalassotherapy programs lasting between two and six days. Choices include the Harmonia - a total relaxation package combining classic Hindu and Thai massage, whirlpool bath, affusion (Vichy) shower and a four hand massage and the popular 6 day Slimming program. Many guests return every year for the latter, some staying several weeks and achieving substantial weight loss .As well as intensive thalassotherapy, the Slimming program includes a personalized diet drawn up by the spa's dietician which follows the principles of the Cretan diet. Meals are served in the Candia gourmet restaurant and include island specialities such as cereals, fruit, vegetables and salads, meat, fish, aromatic herbs and spices, plus health-giving Cretan olive oil as the main source of fat.
My first treatment was the Douche Affusion Relax - a 20 minute Vichy shower. I lay face down on something that looked like an airbed and the shower was turned on and swung over me. Once the therapist had adjusted the temperature to my liking, I was left to relax under the warm jets of water which massaged me from the nape of my neck to the tickly soles of my feet. After ten minutes, the therapist returned and instructed me to turn onto my back for a further ten minutes. Then the shower was turned off and I was given a towel to dry myself off before moving onto my next appointment. No fuss, no pampering - just efficient friendly service. The appointments system works like clockwork, thanks to numbered treatment rooms. Armed with your timetable you simply make your way to your next appointment and wait outside. If you have time to spare between appointments you can relax with a complimentary herbal tea in the main waiting area.
My second treatment was a seaweed envelopment. I had to take my swimsuit off for this and climb naked onto a warmed plastic-lined bed. The therapist waited until I was settled, then slathered warm mud all over my back chest, arms and legs. I was enveloped in a polythene sheet and then a heavier waterproof cover and left to cook for 20 hot minutes. Just when I felt I'd had enough, my therapist returned and helped me into the shower - still wrapped in polythene. She hosed my back and left me to wash off the mud with a lengthy shower.
I had a 40 minute gap before my next treatment, so decided to take a dip in the Aqua Royal - the seawater pool on the top floor. I slipped into the warm still water and had the entire pool to myself for ten blissful minutes. I practised breast stroke for a bit and then swam through into the small outdoor section which was bathed in sunshine. Then the aquarobics class in the adjoining Aqua Gym finished and everyone came into the big pool and the water jets were turned on. My peaceful solitude disintegrated into noisy activity, but it was fun trying out the counter current walkways, umbrella waterfalls, hydro-massage beds, geysers and powerful under-water jets. The ones on the bottom of the pool were especially fierce and gave the soles of my feet an invigorating pummelling.
After the excitement of the Aqua Royal, I was late for my final treatment of the day - an underwater jet shower. This involved sitting in a warm seawater bath and being massaged for ten minutes with an underwater hose. The intensity of the massage surprised me - at times it was even painful. But I kept thinking how it might be breaking down my cellulite so didn't plead with the therapist to stop. The second half of the treatment was a relaxing spa bath with therapeutic oils which was totally relaxing.
My visit to Crete was brief - just two days to enjoy the spa, so I wanted to experience as varied a selection of treatments as possible. My second morning began with a Bain Aromatic Apaisant a pleasant 20 minute bath with added algae, which really softens the skin. Then I went upstairs to the Beauty Center to have a 30-minute body massage followed by a 30-minute facial. Both treatments were pleasant enough and used lovely Thal'ion products. But I was surprised to be given the facial in my bathrobe and disappointed that it didn't include my neck and d collet areas.
My final appointment was with Lia Patelarou, the spa's dietician. Charming and professional, Lia speaks perfect English and her sparkling good looks are proof that she practises what she preaches. We had a short discussion about my health, age and lifestyle and then I was attached to a Body Stat machine via electrodes on my ankles and wrists. This clever little appliance reads the percentages of lean weight, fat weight, water mass and other minerals in your body as well as predicting your daily calorie usage. I won't bore you with the results - other than to say I was a few pounds overweight and quite dehydrated. Lia stressed the importance of drinking sufficient water - at least two litres or four pints a day - little sips throughout the day are as effective as drinking a glass at a time. And water means water - not tea, squash or other fluids made with water. Lia also advised me to eat a good breakfast of carbohydrates and proteins, have protein for lunch and a salad for dinner. If I wanted to lose weight, then absolutely no carbs or fruit after 8pm, as after this time the body converts carb calories into fat. I made a mental note to make radical changes when I returned home!
I enjoyed my brief first visit to Crete - the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands. Next time, I'd like to explore the spectacular mountain ranges, ancient ruins and sleepy villages and experience the tangible benefits of one of Thalasso's programs. I felt better after just two days of treatments, so imagine what a difference a week or even two would make!
